Margin uses your selling price.

A job that costs $800 and sells for $1,000 leaves $200. That is a 20% profit margin: $200 divided by $1,000.

Markup uses your cost.

The same $200 is a 25% markup: $200 divided by $800. Adding 20% to cost would produce a lower margin.

Include all relevant costs for a useful result. This is a pricing calculation before sales tax, not a tax or accounting calculation.
